Taking Action Against Sexual Violence Action Cards

Sexual violence is a deeply pervasive issue that thrives in silence and stigma. As part of our ongoing research project on sexual violence and resilience, we developed these simple yet powerful action cards to spark dialogue and inspire collective responsibility within the Nigerian community and the diaspora.

These cards highlight five essential actions that anyone—whether in local communities or global networks—can take to challenge sexual violence and support survivors. Each message is presented in both English and Nigerian Pidgin to make the information accessible, culturally resonant, and easy to share. It is also available in print, which we have distributed widely to communities.

Why these cards?

Too often, conversations about sexual violence are buried under cultural taboos, myths, and harmful stereotypes. Survivors are left without support, while perpetrators are shielded by silence. These cards serve as practical reminders that:

  • Speaking up breaks the cycle of secrecy that protects perpetrators.

  • Listening to survivors with empathy helps them reclaim their voice.

  • Understanding consent is non-negotiable—it sets clear personal boundaries.

  • Challenging gender stereotypes is key to dismantling the roots of violence.

  • Holding perpetrators accountable, not blaming victims, ensures justice and healing.

The Benefits

By sharing these action cards, we hope to:

  • Encourage honest conversations within families, communities, and organisations.

  • Promote survivor-centred approaches that prioritise care, dignity, and justice.

  • Promote a culture of understanding that questions and dismantles harmful gender norms.

  • Empower individuals to actively intervene and advocate for change.

This is not just a campaign; it is part of a larger effort to document resilience, amplify survivor voices, and transform how communities understand and respond to sexual violence.

We invite you to download, share, and discuss these cards—because change starts with small, intentional actions. Together, we can build safer, more supportive environments for everyone.
